On September 23, 1953, Tim Rogers was the youngest son born to Grady and Geneva Rogers in Vernon, AL. He grew up in Murray Chapel under the leadership of Pastors Early and Mildred Truelove. There he birthed his love for singing the gospel. He later joined Westside Church of Christ. He attended Todd and Lamar County High School (class of 1971) and graduated from Bevill State College in 1973. He went on to work as a barber for the University of Alabama for several years. During this time, he met and married the love of his life, Carolyn Spears. He worked as a supervisor for Hoffman & Robinson Metal Inc. for 14 years. He later joined the United States Postal Service and Royster as a commercial-licensed transporter. Tim and Carolyn made their home in Birmingham, AL where they welcomed two children, Calvin and Rashida.
Tim had a passion for music, singing, football and food. He loved sharing the story of meeting his favorite singer, Johnnie Taylor, backstage after a performance. And when it came to college football, everyone knew Tim’s team, that crimson and white - University of Alabama. Roll Tide Roll!! In the National Football League, Tim always rooted for his favorite, America's Team The Dallas Cowboys. How ‘bout ‘dem cowboys!?!? This love of football led him to coach a little league team in the early eighties. He later served as vice-president of his son’s high school football booster club.
Only his love for food could surpass that for football. Every conversation would include what he ate, what he wanted to eat or what he was cooking for someone else to eat. His skills on the barbeque grill were legendary. Whenever the neighborhood was filled with the aroma of his grill, neighbors were certain to stop by. Smoked turkey, grilled chicken, steaks or ribs - Tim was the master of them all!
He had a genuine love for people and knew no strangers. Tim could talk to anyone! His kind heart, giving spirit and crazy sense of humor touched so many people. Although Tim moved to Birmingham, he kept close to his roots in Vernon, faithfully serving both communities. His great affection for his family, especially his children and grandchildren was evident to everyone.
In the early hours of Sunday, February 26, 2012, Tim entered eternal rest at Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham, AL. He was preceded in death by his parents Grady and Geneva Rogers; a brother, James Edward Rogers; a sister, Gladis Story and a nephew, Kevin Rogers.
He leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted wife of 37 years, Carolyn; a son, Calvin (Michelle) of Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Rashida (Michael) Brown of Gaithersburg, MD; three grandchildren, Tolando, Timothy and Reese; a sister, Mable Smith of Baltimore, MD ; three aunts, Minerva Hollis, Octavia Henry and Katherine (Lester) Armstrong all of Vernon, AL; two uncles, West (Beverly) Henry of San Diego, CA and Jimmy (Stella) Henry of Tuscaloosa, AL; three nieces, Audrey (Marcus) Keith of Atlanta, GA, April Rogers of Baltimore, MD and Ebony Rogers of Vernon, AL; two nephews, Tyrone (Teresa) Rogers of Baltimore, MD and Jamie Rogers of Vernon, AL; special relatives, Isabella Pennington of Vernon, AL, Jean and Johnny Barnes of Birmingham, AL, Alvin Spears, Felicia Casey and Reggie (Jeena) Casey all of Hamilton, AL; two goddaughters, LaToyva Coleman and Harriett Barnes both of Birmingham, AL and a host of other relatives and friends.
