Sulligent
Ann Cantrell, age 89, of Sulligent, AL passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at North Alabama Medical Center in Florence, AL. Ann is the daughter of the late William David (Dave) Shelnut and Martha Viola (Taylor) Shelnut and was the wife of the late Carl Cantrell. Ann had lived in the Sulligent and Beaverton area all of her life. She was retired from the Sulligent Public Library and had previously worked at Hyster Company, The Lamar Leader, and in her own photography business plus several other part time jobs as the opportunity came along. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 22, 2021 at 11:00am from the Otts Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Webb Cemetery. Bro. Dale Taylor, of Murray, KY, nephew to Ann, and Bro. Dwight Bailey to officiate. Visitation will be held at Otts Funeral Home on Sunday, November 21, 2021 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm.
Ann was born to the late Dave and Viola Shelnut in Lamar County near Beaverton on March 27, 1932. Ann enjoyed photography and was quite an accomplished self-taught photographer. She has also published 5 genealogy books, two that were histories of branches of her Shelnut family. Ann enjoyed working at the Sulligent Public Library and worked there for 26 years. She enjoyed meeting people and helping them with their research and reading at the library. Sadly, in later years Ann lost most of her vision to Macular Degeneration and was unable to read. She spent many hours in her later years listening to a recorded version of The Holy Bible. Ann's favorite pastime over the years was working in her yard and flower beds. Ann spent many contented hours in her outside yard work and her favorite yard tool was a short handled surplus military pick. Ann was a member of Beaverton Baptist Church, but regularly attended Union Ridge Freewill Baptist Church.
Ann is survived by a son, Douglas Cantrell of Sulligent and a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Jimmy Cline of Pasadena, Texas. Ann has two grandchildren, Kevin (Vanessa) Cline and Keith (Sumer) Cline of Pearland, Texas. Also surviving Ann is her youngest sister, Darlene (JB) Taylor of Murray, Kentucky. She is also survived by six great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other more distant kin and a large number of friends.
Ann is preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Carl Cantrell, her parents Dave and Viola Taylor Shelnut and by brothers, Preston, Shelton, Elmer, Marion, Paul, and Fred Shelnut and by sisters, Florence Hurd, Maxine Dove, Joan Baker, and Vera Winkleblack and great grandson, Kaleb Cline.
