Jon Richard Basel Mixon, age 85, of Crews, AL, passed away on August 23, 2025.  Funeral services will be held on August 30, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Otts Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Sulligent Cemetery.  Bro. Steven Sanderson and Bro. Jeff Chaffin to officiate the service.  Visitation will be on August 30, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Otts Funeral Home in Sulligent.  The family would like to express a special thank you to Enhabit Hospice of Hamilton.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org) or First Baptist Church Sulligent.

Basel was born November 25, 1939 to the late Will and Hattie Mixon.  He was a 1958 graduate of Sulligent High School and a 1981 graduate of Newport University with a Bachelor of Business Administration.  He served in the Alabama Army National Guard for 8 years.  Following high school and Army basic training, he went to Birmingham and worked for the Alabama Highway Department.  After a couple of years, he took a job in the financing world that led to stops in Birmingham (twice), Tuscaloosa, Huntsville, Sulligent, and Scottsboro before eventually finding his way back to Sulligent to help found First State Bank where, over the course of his 32 years there, he rose to become President before retiring in 2005.  He was a member of First Baptist Church in Sulligent serving in various roles including deacon and chairman of the deacons.  He was also a member of the Gideons.  Basel loved to travel, read and watch westerns, piddle around the farm, and visit with friends and family.

Step grandchildren: Brandon (Marian) Wencil of Harvest, Alabama, Heather (Tyler) Poschel of Columbia, Kentucky, David (Jessie) Wencil of Huntsville, Alabama

Great grandchildren: Charlotte Morgan, John Morgan

Step great grandchildren: Mason Poschel, Joel Poschel, Neil Wencil, Stevie Wencil, Leela Wencil

Brother: Billy Ray Mixon of Birmingham, Alabama

Nephew: Billy Ray Mixon, Jr.
