Charles T. Gilmer Sr., age 88, of Sulligent, AL passed away Sunday, May 2, 2021 at his residence.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at 3:00pm from the Otts Funeral Home Chapel with Military Honors burial to follow in Shiloh Cemetery. Bro. Eddie Ayers to officiate. Visitation will be held at the funeral home prior to the funeral service from 2:00pm until 3:00pm.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lamar County Humane Society at P.O. Box 534, Vernon, AL  35592.

Charles T. Gilmer was born in Sulligent, AL in 1933. He graduated from Sulligent High School in 1951. In that same year, he was selected as the FFA Alabama State Farmer of the Year. Charles graduated from Auburn University in 1955 and was commissioned into the U.S. Army as a 2 ^nd Lt. He served in a number of stations in the United States, Germany and in the Vietnam War. He was an Army aviator, flying both planes and helicopters. He retired at Fort Rucker as a helicopter flight instructor as a Lt. Col. With over 20 years of service. He returned to Lamar County and served as an Alabama State Representative for Lamar and Fayette counties. He operated a real estate business for over forty years. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. He was also a member of Sulligent Masonic Lodge, the Shriners American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife of over sixty years, Marcelle Byrd Gilmer, his sister Claire Marsh, and his parents Stanton Gilmer and Dolly Burnett Gilmer.

He is survived by a son, Charles Gilmer, Jr. and a daughter, Cassandra Gilmer Moore.
