Danny Neal Atkins departed this world on December 28, 2022. He was born in rural Lamar County to (the late) Alma Kemp Atkins and Bradley Atkins on January 13, 1942. His siblings included three brothers and two sisters.

Danny grew up in Vernon, played for the LCHS Bulldogs, and graduated in 1960. He then worked at Turner Grocery before opening and operating Mac's Minit Mart for over twenty years. During that time Danny was very active in the community and lent a helping hand to many who were in need. He was considered a great friend and a wonderful man. He loved Hamm radios, computers, and gardening.

After leaving Vernon he and his wife, (the late) Jeanne Ann Lawrence Atkins moved to the Lawrence family farm in northwest Pickens County. There he's lived happily since 2004.

Danny is preceded in death by his parents; wife Jeanne Atkins; brothers Leon Atkins (Ruby), Noel Atkins; and sisters Juanita Lipton and Elizabeth Pharo (Marvin). He is survived by his children Carol Yvonne Atkins Weathers of Vernon, Michael Neal Atkins (Andy) of Ellenton, FL, and Leslie Kaye Howard Smith (Mike) of Birmingham; brother Paul Atkins (Linda) of Ethelsville, sister-in-law Regina Atkins of Columbus; and his grandchildren Allison Nicole Dove of Columbus, David Roland Smith, and Zachary Bryant Smith of Birmingham.

The service for Mr. Atkins will be Monday, January 2, 2023, at Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Ethelsville. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the funeral at 11:00 a.m. with the gravesite service following.

Pallbearers will be David Smith, Zach Smith, Andy Armone, Gary Pharo, Steve Stokes and Ron Stokes. The officiant will be Rev. Robert Hairston.
