Obituary for Larry Oley Scott

On November 22, 2022, Larry Oley Scott, age 77, was surrounded by his wife and three sons as he left his earthly home and entered his heavenly home. Larry passed peacefully at his residence in the early morning hours ending a life defined by a strong devotion to God and his family. He left behind a collection of wonderful memories and a legacy that his family will continue to cherish.

Larry entered into life on February 25,1945, to Herman and Mattie Lou Trimm Scott in Detroit, AL. He was the oldest of their two children.

In his early years, Larry spent his days helping on the family farm and at the Scott Brothers Feed Mill. From a young age, Larry learned the importance and value of hard work, responsibility and dedication. He graduated from Sulligent High School in 1963. Larry was voted Mr. SHS by his classmates during his senior year. He was also nominated and elected as the State Star Farmer of 1963. During his school years, he played football and served as Treasurer for the FFA.

In March of 1964, Larry married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Wanda Joyce Crosby. They were married at Sulligent Free Will Baptist Church. After their union, Larry and Wanda resided together in Detroit, AL on the same farm where Larry grew up. Larry and Wanda were blessed with three healthy sons, Joel, Ronnie and Jacky. Larry was a devoted husband and father. He loved his wife and his sons dearly. He taught his sons the importance of God, family and hard work. Over the course of Larry and Wanda's 58 years of marriage, they welcomed seven grandchildren and enjoyed every minute of being grandparents.

Larry spent 52 years in the propane industry. He began his career in propane in 1966 with United Gas in Sulligent, AL. In 2006, Larry and Wanda started their own business, Mid-South Propane. God gave Larry the ability to talk to people and he was a man of his word. His friendly personality and strong work ethic allowed him to be successful in the propane industry. Mid-South Propane grew quickly and was truly a family business. All three of the Scott boys joined their parents in this journey and worked hard to help their parent's vision become a success. Later in the history of the business, two grandchildren joined the family business to continue the family legacy. In 2018, the Scott family sold their business and Larry was ready to retire. Larry and Wanda retired together and enjoyed traveling and making memories with their family. They successfully visited all 50 states and visited several different countries together. Larry enjoyed coon hunting, riding horses, playing rook and taking his family out on his boat at Smith Lake.

Larry leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Wanda Scott (Detroit, AL), his sons, Joel Scott (Detroit, AL), Ronnie/Dana Scott (Detroit, AL) and Jacky/Heidi Scott (Hamilton, AL). He leaves behind seven grandchildren, Rylee/Lee Akers (Detroit, AL), Haigen Scott (Detroit, AL), Jaron Scott (Tuscaloosa, AL), Allie Scott (Detroit, AL), Jacob Scott (Tuscaloosa, AL), Landon Scott (Detroit, AL) and Mackinlee Scott (Hamilton, AL). Larry is also survived by his sister, Theresa Whitaker (Detroit, AL) and a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Preceding Larry in death are his parents, Herman and Mattie Lou Scott.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at 11:00am at Union Chapel Baptist Church with burial to follow in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Bro. B.J. Mills to officiate. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 25, 2022 at Union Chapel Baptist Church from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. In Lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to the Union Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 23 Hamilton, AL 35570.
