Rod was born to the late Roy Gilliland and Jean Gilliland Eastman of Splunge, MS. He was a man known for his strong work ethic, loyalty, and the quiet love he had for those around him. Rod took great pride in his work and dedicated more than 30 years of his life to Marathon Equipment before his retirement in 2024. He was a dependable man who believed in working hard, lending a hand to those in need, keeping his word, and doing things the right way. His commitment and determination were qualities that defined him throughout his life.

Rod found peace in the outdoors. He loved fishing, hunting, and spending time surrounded by God's creation. Whether he was on the water, in the woods, or simply propped up in a barn talking with friends, those were the simple things in life that made him feel most at home. Above all else, Rod loved his family. He was a devoted husband of 35 years to his wife, Melinda. He was a loving father to his daughter, Maegan Flynn, and son-in-law, Kyle. His greatest joy was being "RD" to his granddaughter, Emerson Flynn, who was truly his pride and joy. The bond they shared was special, and the memories they created together will be treasured forever.

Rod was also a lifelong Alabama football fan. To many old friends, he was affectionately known as "Football," a nickname that became a part of who he was and a reminder of the friendships and memories he built throughout his life.

On January 31, 2026, Rod gave his life to Christ. During one of the most difficult seasons of his life, he found hope, peace, and strength through his faith. As he faced his battle with glioblastoma, Rod continued forward with courage and perseverance, surrounded by the love of his family and strengthened by God's grace.

Rod was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Gilliland and Jean Gilliland Eastman; and his brother, Coy Gilliland.

He is survived by his wife, Melinda Gilliland; his daughter, Maegan (Kyle) Flynn; his granddaughter, Emerson Flynn; his siblings, Brenda Gilliland, Rita (JW) Sandlin, Carol Prothro, Lou (Donald Joe) Flynn, Vicky (Mitchell) Puckett, Gerald Eastman, and Jeff Eastman; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and great friends who were blessed to know him.

Though our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the life Rod lived, the love he gave, and the legacy he leaves behind. He will be remembered as a hardworking man, a loving husband and father, a proud RD, a faithful friend, and a man who stayed true to himself.

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith."
