Obituary

Shirley O. Black was a caring wife, daughter, mother, grandmother and Sunny, sister, and friend.  She left this world to be with her Lord on Tuesday, January 17, 2023.  Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday, January 22, at Otts Funeral Home in Sulligent, Alabama. The funeral service will be Monday, January 23 at 11:00 AM, with a visitation at 10:00 AM at Detroit Church of Christ. The service will be conducted by Phillip Hathcock.

Shirley was born to Clovis and Ola Edgeworth on September 29, 1939.  She was predeceased in this life by her daughter, Monica Gail Black; her father, Clovis Edgeworth; her mother, Ola Marie Edgeworth; and her brother, Alan Edgeworth.  She is survived by her beloved husband of more 63 years, Billy Joe Black; two sons, Phillip Keith Black and wife, Tracy (McAreavy) Black (Leeds, Alabama); and Gregory Alan Black and wife, Laura (Steen) Black (Boerne, Texas); and a daughter, Donna Nicole Strickland and husband Keith Strickland (Chelsea, Alabama); two grandsons, Brandon Phillip Black and McGinnis Alan Black; three granddaughters, Keely Nicole Strickland, Erica Marie Strickland and Emma Corynne Black; a brother, Kenneth Edgeworth and wife, Jewel (Thompson) Edgeworth; a sister Ann (Edgeworth) Harrison and husband Junior Harrison, and a Sister-in-law, Peggy Ford; and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley grew up in Detroit, Alabama, graduating in 1957 from Sulligent High School. She attended Freed-Hardeman University for a brief time.

Shirley worked at the McCoy Garment Plant in Detroit, Alabama as a receptionist. She is mostly known for her decoration flower making. She began her flower shop in the basement of their home until she outgrew it and built a building to hold all her flowers. It was a family affair until she retired from it in 2021.

Shirley was a dedicated Christian and a member of Detroit Church of Christ.
