Youell was born on January 27, 1934 in Sulligent, AL to the late Marvin Jackson and Vera Belle Cantrell. After graduating from high school in 1952 he joined the United States Army where he served for two years.

Before working and retiring from Hyster Company in 1996 Youell was a barber and he continued to cut hair at his home after retirement.
